Stand Out Features
- ONE OF A KIND SWIMMING ACTION | The CJ Special skinny needlefish is a unique Vancouver Island treasure that swims unlike anything you already have in your tackle box. With an isometric, perfectly balanced design and a specific, bend and twist in the tail, the lures roll in one direction for 8 to 12 inches, then reverse and roll in the opposite direction. This erratic action mimics baitfish unlike any other lure on the market and has proven extremely effective for all predatory fish tested.
- HIGH-QUALITY MATERIALS & LOTS OF SELECTION | Powder-coated aluminum body. Selection of sizes from 3.5 inches to 5 inches, and great colour choices. See “Pro Tips!” below to learn about the best CJ style for your fishery.
- RAZOR SHARP HOOKS | Mustad Ultrapoint hooks ensure you are getting a top quality lure that is ready to fish.
- BUILT TO LAST | Premium aluminum paired with durable powder coating guarantees this lure to perform for many fishing adventures.
- DEADLY TAPING COMBINATIONS | Prismatic, UV ultraviolet mylar tape and glow in the dark eyes.
- Made in Canada
Fish Wherever You Wish
The CJ’s erratic action mimics baitfish unlike any other lure on the market, and has proven extremely effective for all predatory fish tested: salmon, halibut and cod on the West Coast; steelhead trout, bass, walleye, crappie and pike on inland waterways; and grouper, swordfish, tuna and Mahi Mahi (Dorado) in Mexico and Hawai’i.
Pro Tips!
Aluminum needlefish CJ Special lures imitate wounded baitfish, and were developed specifically for use as trolling lures. Their lightweight design allows for a greater variety of action even at slower speeds.
Trolling Speed - A trolling speed between 2.5 and 3.2 mph is recommended, although speed depends on prevailing conditions. The key is to drop the lure below the surface and adjust the speed until a lateral, darting action occurs along with the body roll.
Trolling Setup - CJ Special needlefish lures have been used successfully with or without an inline flasher. When using an inline flasher, a leader of 6 ft or more is suggested, to ensure the action of the CJ Special is not impeded by the movement of the flasher. When using the CJ Special needlefish spoon on its own, a dummy flasher setup is a recommended. Attach the flasher from or just above the downrigger cannonball. Then attach the snap for the CJ Special leader about 6 to 8 feet up the main line from the cannonball. The leader should be a minimum of 3 feet longer than the leader length used for the dummy flasher - and a leader length of 20 to 30 feet beyond the flasher is common.
History of the CJ Special Lure
CJ Special lures were invented by Charlie Jones of Duncan, British Columbia, Canada. Mr. Jones holds both US and Canadian patents for this entirely unique spoon lure design, which has proven to be extremely effective at catching fish.
Charlie spent decades developing and perfecting his namesake spoon lure with a vigorous passion. As a result, CJ’s are built to extremely thought out specifications. For years, CJ’s remained the go-to lure of the select few lucky enough to acquire them from Charlie. This included a variety of professional charter fisherman, fishing lodges, commercial trollers and a few lucky anglers.
In 2017 The CJ Special became commercially available to the sport-fishing market through a distribution partnership with PEETZ Outdoors. PEETZ is proud to continue the legacy of the CJ Special Lure and take this Vancouver Island born gem to anglers worldwide.
Tested By Professional Anglers
According to Gibran White, Marine Operations Manager at Nootka Marine Adventures and a professional salt and freshwater sport fishing guide in British Columbia for more than 26 years, ”CJ Special lures have created an entirely new dimension for both trolling and casting. The 3.5" needlefish and 3.5" regular (anchovy) are the top two most utilized spoons I have in my tackle box when guiding for all species of salmon... these spoons will out-fish 95% of most bait fisherman any day, any tide."
CJ Special lures are available in both aluminum alloy and brass in a range of sizes, shapes and weights that have all been extensively guide-tested. The aluminum and brass weights have shown equally effective for trolling. The brass weight versions are also ideal for casting and jigging.
