Victoria Fundraiser for Sooke Salmon Enhancement Society
Sunday, February 28, 2016 marks the beginning of what is expected to become an anticipated annual fishing derby event. The 2016 Winter Trotac Fishing (“WTF”) Derby hosted by Trotac Marine Ltd. dives into its inaugural year with a day long derby that culminates in dinner and chances to win great prizes from local donors.
Help Trotac Fundraise!
This derby is a fundraiser for the Sooke Salmon Enhancement Society. This long-standing organization has managed hatchery and stream enhancement projects through a dedicated volunteer base since it was founded in 1954.
Trotac Marine has a goal to raise $2,000 for the SSES during the 2016 derby, and is looking for your help to make this goal a reality this weekend.

Derby tickets are $50 per rod and include:
- Derby entrance
- Weigh in of 1 fish per ticket
- Appetizers and passed plates dinner at Lido Waterfront Bistro
- A WTF derby t-shirt
- A day of excitement and (mostly true) fishing tales!
A cash bar will be available at the bistro. There will also be a 50/50 Draw and many raffle prizes. Tickets can be purchased exclusively at Trotac Marine offices:

Last day to purchase your derby tickets is Saturday, February 27, 2016 by 5pm.
Derby Rules
- Derby entrants will be allowed to weigh in one fish per ticket
- There are no boundary restrictions for this derby -fish wherever you want – as long as DFO regulations permit.
- Start time for the derby is sun up.
- Derby Weigh-In will be at Lido Waterfront Bistro at 3pm on February 28, 2016.
- Weigh-in time is limited. You must be checked into the weigh in by 3:30pm – no exceptions!

Trotac, which is a contraction for “trolling and tackle”, was founded by Pete Thomson in 1972 as a family-operated, west coast commercial fishing fleet business. Trotac Marine Ltd. expanded its building and staff in the early 80’s to supplying:

About the Sooke Salmon Enhancement Society
The Sooke Salmon Enhancement Society (SSES) was founded by the late Jack Brooks. His vision and tenacity aimed to find long-term solutions for the sustainability of local salmon.
In 1954 he persuaded the DFO to construct the fish trap and dam on DeMamiel Creek beside Young Lake, which the Society continues to maintain and operate. By 1966 efforts had turned to hatching salmon in homemade gravel boxes that were set in Mary Vine Creek. In 1981 the hatchery began operations at its present location on Rocky Creek – just above the confluence of the DeMamiel and Rocky.
Today, the activities of (SSES) include the operation of the Jack Brook’s Hatchery, carrying on education activities in schools and the community with respect to salmon enhancement and stream keeping, and stream enhancement in the waters of the Sooke river and its tributaries. SSES operates entirely with volunteer labour whose activities include trapping of brood stock in the fall, taking and rearing eggs and alevin, daily feeding of fry, hatchery maintenance and summer feeding of smolts in the sea and lake pens.
